Students from thirty elementary schools in the district competed in the 2016 Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl. The McEachern High School Performing Arts Center was packed with an estimated 1,500 students, family members, and teachers as competitors answered questions from 17 books. All of the teams and coaches did their best, and the nail-biting competition came down to a three-way tie. The Steering Committee thought quickly and conducted two tie-breaker rounds and tallied up the scores.
The final three teams captured the trophies of the day. Shallowford Falls came in third place; Hayes Elementary came in second place; and Birney Elementary came in first place. It is interesting to note that these teams placed in this order the last time the competition was held at McEachern High School in 2012. Once again, Birney and Hayes will represent Cobb County at The University of West Georgia in the next round of the competition.
