State of the Arts: Band Director Making A Difference

GEORGIA-fill-140x230[1]School Band & Orchestra Magazine recently released its 18th annual list of “50 Directors Who Make A Difference”. One director from each state is chosen for this honor and this year, Joseph Heiberger from Lovinggood Middle School, is the honoree for the state of Georgia. Heiberger has been teaching for 22 years and currently has 465 students in his band program.

When asked how he hoped to make a difference in his student’s lives, Joseph responded, “As a music educator, I realize that the majority of my students will not be choosing music as a profession. Some may decide to be a teacher or perhaps even a performer. Hopefully, many will continue to experience making music for the rest of their lives in some manner. However, whether or not they choose music as a profession, I hope that the life lessons learned through studying music are lessons that will always be a part of them.”

CCSD Supervisor of Band & Orchestra Christopher Ferrell stated, “This is a truly exceptional honor for Mr. Heiberger to be selected to represent the state of Georgia. He serves as a model for all of our music educators not only in Cobb County but across the state and nation.”
