Langford Takes 1st in the Georgia “Let’s Move!” Essay Contest

Congratulations to Joel Langford, a student at Barber Middle School, for being awarded first place in the Georgia School Nutrition Association’s “Let’s Move!” essay writing contest. The contest had applicants from the entire state, and Joel’s first place essay means he and several of his classmates will be taking part in a field trip to the University of Georgia, to meet with student athletes to talk about the importance of living a healthy lifestyle. He’ll also be presented with a plaque at a banquet in his honor held on the UGA campus.

The “Let’s Move!” initiative was launched by First Lady Michelle Obama, with the stated goal of eliminating childhood obesity within a generation. The Georgia School Nutrition Association helps in this effort by raising awareness of the initiative as well as offering incentives like the UGA banquet, such as workshops, programs, and other special events.

The goal of the essay contest was to encourage other students to make good decisions about their health and well-being by writing personal stories of their own challenges, goals and triumphs that they’ve experienced in their quest to become fit and healthy.
