Playing in front of an audience filled with parents, peers and community members may make students nervous. Pack the room with Georgia’s most celebrated composers, conductors, teachers and music industry officials and the pressure increases.
The Lovinggood Middle School eighth grade Symphonic Band and Orchestra recently overcame that pressure of playing for music experts. The students performed at the 2017 Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA) In-service Conference in Athens, Ga. and received rave reviews.
“In addition to the expressive nature of the performances, both the band and the orchestra displayed unprecedented technical skill and interpretive understanding of some very sophisticated music,” said Christopher Ferrell, Cobb County School District supervisor of instrumental music. “There were many comments after the concerts recognizing this nature of the programs and the selections.”
After reviewing musical submissions from across the state, GMEA selected the Lovinggood students to perform at the group’s conference, which is attended by composers, conductors, educators and industry professionals from across the nation.
The band is under the direction of Joe Heiberger, Lovinggood band director, and Shelley Ferrell, Lovinggood assistant band director. The orchestra is under the direction of Barbera Secrist.
