Out of all the bands that submitted musical recordings, the Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA) selected only three to perform at its annual conference in Athens, Georgia. Hightower Trail Middle School’s Eighth Grade Symphonic Band was one of the three bands invited to perform for the music educators, who gathered from across the state.
Hightower Trail’s Symphonic Band has performed at the annual GMEA event three times over the past decade. (Dickerson Middle School Percussion Ensemble demonstrated their musical skills at last year’s GMEA conference.)
In addition to the Symphonic Band’s recent success, the Hightower Trail Chamber Orchestra was also selected to compete in the 2018 American String Teacher’s Association National Orchestra Festival in Atlanta.
However, the middle school students are not the only ones earning accolades. The National Band Association awarded Hightower Trail band directors Andrew Cole and Fred Norton the Citation of Excellence. This award signifies the two directors’ outstanding contribution to bands and band music. Cole has served as Hightower Trail’s band director for more than 20 years, and Norton has worked as assistant director at the school for over a decade.
