“I chose Ms. Larkin because she has always made me a greater student. She inspires me to keep going on to do what I love, and she loves me for who I am.” Those words from Dowell Elementary School fifth grader Nevaeh brought tears to the eyes of Erin Larkin.
Nevaeh surprised Larkin by recognizing her as the Phenomenal Friday Teacher of the Week during a celebration at the school March 2. If the school-wide announcement made Larkin feel special, her parade with Nevaeh through two lines of cheering students, who were holding celebratory signs, may have made her feel like a queen for a day.
“I’m totally shocked, amazed, and totally surprised by the whole honor,” the Phenomenal Friday Teacher gushed. “To know that I impacted Nevaeh the way I did means the world to me.
Nevaeh said she would remember Larkin’s impact on her life well after she leaves elementary school. She thinks her classmates will too because of the way Larkin encourages all of her students to find their passion and stick with it.
Nevaeh was happy that she had the opportunity to honor her teacher, especially at this time of the year when students are preparing to take state assessments.
“I think it is good for students to recognize their teacher because teachers get us ready for milestones. They make us better readers for the next grade,” she added.
For Larkin, being recognized by a student is the greatest honor she could receive.
“That’s why I am here. That’s why I do what I do every day,” the Phenomenal Friday Teacher professed. “[The students] inspire me to come in every day. It makes me cry because I do love them.”
