Cobb Schools Community Members Join Together in ‘Dancing with the Stars Smyrna’ to Raise Money for Campbell High School

Nine local stars and their professional dance instructors will take the stage January 19 for Dancing with the Stars Smyrna at the Jennie T. Anderson Theatre in Marietta to raise money for a new weight room at Campbell High School.

The Campbell school community has saved for the past three years to provide the students with a large scale, professional designed facility that is capable of effectively training entire teams in a single session, according to Campbell’s Athletic Director Jeff Hutson. The school community is looking to the dancing competition to help them reach their fundraising goal so students can begin using the new weightlifting facility this spring.

The new athletic equipment will be the second major upgrade for Campbell athletes this school year. Campbell students recently stepped into the school’s new gym, which was built with funds from Ed-SPLOST.

In addition to raising money to help Campbell athletes, the Dancing with the Stars Smyrna event will spotlight the dancing talents of community members like Campbell High teacher Christopher Gagnier and his dance partner Paige McCormick, who attended Pebblebrook High School’s Center for Excellence in the Performing Arts (CCCEPA).

Other members of the Cobb County School District community will join Gagnier and McCormick on stage to compete for the People’s Choice and Judge’s Choice Awards. Griffin Middle School’s principal Paul Gillihan will lace up his dancing shoes along with his dance partner Grace Blomberg, a current student at CCCEPA.

Eric Homansky, a physical education teacher at Teasley Elementary School, will show off his dance moves, as will longtime Campbell PTSA member Elaine Isley, who grew up attending Cobb schools.

Sprayberry High School graduate and current Campbell High School teacher Lisha Wood is also among the Dancing with the Stars contestants. Some of the other local stars include a member of the Smyrna Police Department, an accomplished Atlanta Chef, a member of the Smyrna City Council, and Smyrna’s Assistant City Administrator.

The judges include actresses Kim Fields and Julie Piekarski Probst, Smyrna Mayor Max Bacon, and radio host and actor Raynel “HeadKrack” Ruffin. Actor Chris Morgan will host the Dancing with the Stars event.

“I want to personally thank those that have already dedicated countless hours to get this program underway. Thank you to the participants and support staff for your commitment to making sure the event will be a success,” Campbell Athletic Director Hutson said in a letter to the Campbell community. “Please join us as we seek to “finish the drill” on funding a weight room that is sure to make our community, school, and athletic program proud.”
