Cobb Schools Budget Presentation Earns International Business Award, Praise for Fiscal Integrity

The Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO) recently recognized the Cobb County School District for excellence in a budget presentation by awarding the Meritorious Budget Award (MBA) for the 2018–2019 budget year. ASBO International’s MBA and Pathway to the MBA promote and recognize best budget presentation practices in school districts.

Cobb Schools is one of only a few school districts in Georgia to earn the international recognitional.

Cobb has participated in the MBA program for 15 years. According to the International business group, that is a true reflection of the Cobb County School District’s “commitment to fiscal integrity.”

A panel of school financial professionals reviewed Cobb’s budget documents for compliance with the MBA Criteria Checklist and other requirements. Districts, like Cobb, that successfully demonstrate they have met the necessary program requirements earn the MBA. The Pathway to the MBA award allows districts to ease into full MBA compliance.

“Districts that apply to the MBA or Pathway to the MBA programs recognize their community needs to be able to easily find and understand important district financial information,” ASBO International’s Executive Director David Lewis explained. “Awarded budget documents are accurate, easy to read, and communicate the district’s goals and objectives. Reviewer comments help districts continually improve their budget presentation—which is one reason districts apply each year.”

Cobb’s budget for the Fiscal Year 2020, which was approved in May, prioritizes students and staff and includes a historic 8 to 12.6 % proposed raise for every non-temporary staff member in the Cobb County School District.
