Cobb Schools Finance Team Showcases District Financial Training Program at National Conference

How does a billion-dollar organization, like Cobb Schools, provide financial training to employees?

That is exactly what members of the Cobb Schools Financial Department explained recently at the Association of School Business Officials International conference in National Harbor, Maryland. ASBO International is a collaborative, educational association that supports school business professionals dedicated to equipping its members with an active global network and a growing knowledge center of tools, resources, and services that define best practices in school business management. ASBO International members include business professionals employed in K–12 school districts, community colleges, universities, and state departments of education.

At the conference, Nancy Tolbert, Director of Financial Services Special Projects, and Jeff Crimm, Financial Training Manager, shared the District’s secret to success with ASBO school business officials from across the country.

Drawing upon the experiences of recent training initiatives, they discussed the development, implementation, progress, and future of the District’s comprehensive, multi-tiered, financial training, and support program. The focus of the national-scale presentation was “Implementing a Successful Financial Training Program for Non-Financial Employees”.

With the emphasis on employees outside the Financial Department, Tolbert and Crimm detailed how the Cobb Schools program has helped provide efficient content delivery to employees with various responsibilities and how it limited the amount of time and resources required for additional support. They explained how to replicate and scale a similar program including the development, implementation, and dissemination of training materials.

The school business officials in attendance took notes on how Cobb ensures that employees understand the policies, procedures, and business practices required to maintain the financial well-being of school districts. Because of the Cobb County School District’s high reputation for financial management, those in attendance seized on the opportunity to learn from the Cobb Schools team.
