Cobb Schools BOE Looks Ahead to Opening of New Cobb Horizon, Pearson Middle School Buildings

During the May 14 Board meeting, the Cobb Schools Board of Education voted to move another step closer to welcoming Cobb Horizon High School students to a new facility and opening the doors to the new Susan Todd Pearson Middle School.

Cobb Horizon will relocate to property near the intersection of Cobb Parkway and Terrell Mill Road. Beginning in Fall 2020, the more than 90,000-square-foot facility will provide room for Cobb Horizon to grow and support even more students.

As a result, the Board voted to approve the demolition of the current Cobb Horizon facility to make way for the construction of the Susan Todd Pearson Middle School. Construction of Cobb’s newest middle school is scheduled to be completed in time to welcome students in August 2021.

“I am pleased with what the future holds for Cobb students in Smyrna thanks to the Ed-SPLOST funds that have paved the way for the construction of the new Pearson Middle School. It is also exciting that, in this new location, Cobb Horizon will be better positioned to serve more students who need a non-traditional approach to succeed,” said Cobb Board Chair Brad Wheeler.

While construction projects across Cobb Schools continue, Superintendent Chris Ragsdale emphasized that the District will continue to rely on guidance and support from the Department of Education and Governor’s Office during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are grateful for the communication we have received from state and federal agencies as they continue to update us during this time of uncertainty,” said Cobb Schools Superintendent Chris Ragsdale. “We are hopeful regarding plans for the fall, but final plans will be based on the guidance from the Department of Education, Georgia Department of Public Health, and CDC. We are also still keeping our hopes alive for in-person graduation ceremonies, but those decisions will also depend on the guidance we receive.”

Based on the Superintendent’s recommendation regarding potential impacts related to COVID-19, the BOE also voted to move the June meeting to June 25, 2020.

Additionally, the Board Members approved personnel changes including two new principals.
