Congratulations to the media specialists and teams at Compton Elementary and Palmer Middle schools, recipients of 2011 Exemplary Library Media Program Awards from the Georgia Department of Education!

Compton Elementary was selected as one of two Exemplary Elementary Library Media Programs for 2011. Media specialist Peggy Milam-Creighton (now at Addison Elementary) helmed the program through the 2010-2011 school year and submitted Compton’s program for the honor.

The media program at Palmer Middle was chosen as Exemplary Middle School Library Media Program for 2011, one of three statewide. Media specialist Janell McClure’s program was selected on the strengths of her leadership in:

  • ongoing assessment of student achievement and data-driven decisions,
  • support of the school improvement goals through collaboration with teachers on math and information literacy standards,
  • use and support of 21st century technology skills, and
  • efforts to help each student reach the goal of reading 25 books per year

Schools complete a comprehensive application for the designation, including a narrative describing the program’s offerings and a rubric measuring student achievement, staffing, facilities & resources, administrative support, staff development and technology integration.

Both award-winning media specialists will share their experiences and expertise with other Georgia school library media specialists at the GaETC Conference in November in Atlanta.
