Acclaimed poet Taylor Mali visited Campbell High School English classes on Friday, Sept. 14. Mali specializes in poetry slam, a form of performance art. He has taken six of seven national poetry slam teams to the finals in national championships and even won the nationals four times.

Mali was an original poet on “Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry,” an HBO series. In addition, Mali was a teacher for nine years and continues to be an outspoken advocate of educators. His one-man show,“Teacher! Teacher,” won best solo prize at the 2001 U S. Comedy Arts Festival.

Currently, Mali performs as a spoken word and voiceover artist. He won the Golden Earphones Award for children’s narration of the book “The Great Fire.” He is also the former president of Poetry Slam Incorporated.

Slam encourages audience participation and successive rounds of competition. It was first developed in 1984 by a Chicago construction worker named Marc Smith. For more information, visit www.poetryslam.com.
