Cobb was well represented at the Georgia Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl at the University of Georgia on March 1. Still Elementary placed second in the state finals for elementary schools, while Smitha Middle School placed fourth among middle schools. The state finals were part of the 39th Annual Conference on Children’s Literature and were the culmination of months of reading and practice sessions for the students on these two teams.
The Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl began in DeKalb County, where teacher Helen Ruffin created a reading competition in which teams of students from different schools test their knowledge of selected books. Her colleagues joined in this unique endeavor and the phenomenon spread across Georgia. The state competition is open to students in grades four through twelve throughout Georgia. More information about the bowl is available at http://www.dekalb.k12.ga.us/hrrb/.
Congratulations to both Cobb teams for this excellent display of reading comprehension and teamwork!
