Nicholson Elementary Custodian Receives National Recognition

Congratulations to Barry Crocker, custodian at Nicholson Elementary School, who was named an Outstanding School Support Staff Member by the Family Friendly Schools/Engage Institute in Virginia. Mr. Crocker is one of 21 staff members honored nationwide. All of the winners were included in a new book, Building Better Schools by Engaging Support Staff.

In the book, authors Sam Bartlett and Vie Herlocker show support staff how to become a critical link to their schools’ success by using proven customer service strategies. The stories of twenty-one employees, selected from nationwide nominations, demonstrate how to use these strategies to make a difference in their schools and communities. Mr.Crocker contributed to the chapters on teams, time management, and dealing with change.

Mr. Crocker was nominated by former Nicholson assistant principal Cheryl Mauldin, who is now principal of Kincaid Elementary. “Barry Crocker has a kind word for everyone who enters Nicholson Elementary. The students love him and remember him long after they have moved on to middle and high school. He has many former students visit him each year. He takes an interest in students, mentors them, and talks to them about making good choices,” said Mauldin.
