It’s been a year since the program started with three enthusiastic interns who were eager to learn job skills and make better lives for themselves. Since that time, thanks to the generous support of CCSD Central Office staff, the program has grown tremendously and the original interns, as well as many new ones, have had opportunities to build their confidence, build their resume, and build their network of references.
The Corporate Classroom is a program through CCSD Transition Services that seeks to provide a pathway to employment for men and women ages 18 to 22 by giving them the opportunity to develop marketable vocational skills through job immersion. These young adults have gone through an application and interview process to be accepted into the program. All of the Corporate Classroom interns are highly capable young men and women who simply need an opportunity to gain the skills and experiences necessary for gainful employment.
In just one year since the program’s inception, the interns have had many doors opened to them and we have many exciting things to report! Thanks to the support of CCSD staff, these interns have had the opportunity to learn valuable job skills through their experiences as co-workers in several areas: Risk Management, Human Resources, Finance, Mailroom, Custodial and Maintenance, and Transportation, as well as numerous other departments throughout the 514 Building. As Corporate Classroom interns have worked in these departments, they have gained the knowledge and abilities necessary for employment within our community. Several of the participating interns are now interning within businesses throughout our community. We now have interns at Jim Ellis Volkswagen, Classic Collision, Heritage Assisted Living, and Southern Computer Warehouse. We also have established a partnership with the Hilton Marietta Conference Center and will be placing interns there soon. Additionally, our intern at Heritage Assisted Living was recently offered a permanent, paid position.
As our program moves forward, we will continue to expand in several key ways. Firstly, we hope to accept up to 10 new interns into the program starting in the 2015-2016 school year. Secondly, we have the opportunity to grow within the school district as we expand to new CCSD locations within the next few months. Finally, we plan to partner with more and more businesses and create more and more opportunities for our interns to successfully find their unique paths to employment. You can find more information about our program, interns, and partnering businesses at our website, www.corporateclassroom.org.
It would not have been possible without the kindness of so many Cobb employees who have graciously taken the time to teach our interns a variety of skills and who have treated all of our interns with the respect of a co-worker. So many people have helped make the first year possible and have truly exemplified the Cobb mantra, “One team, one goal: student success.”
